Game Terminology

Banker

One of two primary betting positions in baccarat. The Banker hand is the second to act and follows specific drawing rules. Despite its name, the Banker is not the house dealer but rather one of two possible outcome positions. Betting on the Banker typically has slightly better odds due to acting second.

Player

The other primary betting position in baccarat. The Player hand is the first to complete its action and draws or stands according to established rules. This position offers straightforward gameplay where the outcome depends purely on card values and fixed drawing rules.

Tie

An outcome where both the Banker and Player hands achieve equal point totals. Tie bets pay significantly higher odds, typically 8:1 or 9:1, but statistically occur in approximately 14.4% of hands. This bet carries a higher house edge compared to Player or Banker bets.

Natural

A hand totaling eight or nine points using only the first two dealt cards. A Natural results in an immediate win and ends the round. This is the strongest possible opening hand in baccarat and cannot be beaten by drawing additional cards.

Punto Banco

The most common baccarat variation played globally. In Punto Banco, all drawing decisions are predetermined by mathematical rules rather than player choice. "Punto" refers to the Player hand, and "Banco" refers to the Banker hand, making it accessible to casual players.

Chemin de Fer

A traditional baccarat variation where players make decisions about drawing additional cards. The Banker position rotates among players, and participants have more control over gameplay outcomes. This version emphasizes skill and decision-making more than Punto Banco.

Betting & Strategy Terms

House Edge

The mathematical advantage held by the casino over players. In baccarat, the Banker bet has approximately 1.06% house edge, the Player bet has 1.24% edge, and Tie bets carry approximately 14.4% edge. Understanding house edge helps players make informed betting decisions.

Commission

A fee paid on winning Banker bets, typically 5%. When betting on Banker and winning, players receive reduced payouts due to this commission. Some variations offer reduced commissions, which significantly impact long-term expected value calculations.

Betting Pattern

A sequence of wagers based on previous outcomes or predetermined systems. Common patterns include flat betting, progressive betting, and trend-following strategies. Mathematically, no betting pattern can overcome the house edge, though pattern-based approaches appeal to many players.

Bankroll Management

The practice of allocating a specific amount for gambling sessions and maintaining disciplined betting limits. Effective bankroll management determines session length and risk exposure. Experts recommend betting only 1-5% of total bankroll per hand to absorb normal variance.

Variance

The statistical measure of fluctuation in outcomes over a sample of hands. High variance means more dramatic swings between winning and losing streaks. Understanding variance helps players prepare mentally and financially for both winning and losing periods.

Expected Value

The average amount a player can expect to win or lose per bet over an extended period. In baccarat, Banker bets have positive expected value for the house, Player bets have slightly worse expected value, and Tie bets have the worst expected value for players.

Card Mechanics & Values

Point Value

The numerical worth assigned to each card in baccarat. Aces count as one, numbered cards count as face value, and tens, jacks, queens, and kings count as zero. Only the last digit of total card values is used, so values range from zero to nine.

Third Card Rule

The fixed set of rules determining when hands must draw a third card. Player hands draw on totals 0-5 and stand on 6-9. Banker hands follow more complex rules based on both their own total and the Player's third card, if applicable.
